BRUBECK EDITIONS
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time OutTakes
(Vinyl LP)
Previously Unreleased Takes from the Original 1959 Sessions!
Time OutTakes is the first release from the new Brubeck Editions label, issued for Dave Brubeck's 100th birthday on December 6, 2020. While researching books written to celebrate jazz legend Dave Brubeck's Centennial, a fascinating discovery was made; there were brilliant alternate takes for most of the tunes released on Time Out, the first jazz LP to sell over a million copies. So the Brubeck family found those tapes and created this first release on their new family label, Brubeck Editions.
Even alto saxophonist, Paul Desmond, had not yet settled on a consistent melody. Brubeck was playing the famous piano vamp in order to hold the piece together along with the glue provided by Gene Wright on bass. It was supposed to simply be a tune that would feature the drums. This version from Time OutTakes explodes with one hell of a drum solo, longer than the original hit single, proving why Joe was considered one of the very best drummers in jazz. The 1959 sessions were produced by Teo Macero and engineered by Fred Plaut.
"Time OutTakes features seven tracks that have never been heard before. These newly discovered recordings feature wonderful performances that are every bit as compelling as those on the original Time Out. We discovered that during the original 1959 sessions the Quartet also recorded 'I'm In a Dancing Mood' and an unlisted trio jam with a major drum solo that included snatches of the melody from 'Watusi Drums.' Two tracks from Time Out, 'Pick Up Sticks' and 'Everybody's Jumpin,' were achieved in one take so no alternates exist to include here. These seven new performances (and bonus track) are fascinating finds." - Chris Brubeck
"We've all heard Dave Brubeck's Time Out - but never quite like this. You'll hear Dave Brubeck's signature pieces afresh and anew. Listening to this album will make you rediscover why you fell in love with The Dave Brubeck Quartet featuring Paul Desmond, Joe Morello and Eugene Wright. This is mesmerizing music." - Kabir Sehgal, Grammy Award Winning Producer
"It's the stateliness of the old vs. the looseness of the outtake and the more natural ease of Desmond and Brubeck's solos that make it a flip of the coin. The wonderfully spliced bits of band banter that make up the final track add terrifically to the overall ease of the entire disc." - Mike Jurkovic, All About Jazz
