Formed in 1977, British rockers Dire Straits - led by Mark Knopfler's lush guitar work and laconic vocals - were one of the finest groups of the late 20th century. Knopfler and his band were full of rock 'n' roll romance and couldn't help but become superstars and mainstays of MTV with elegant and understated songs like "Sultans of Swing," "Romeo & Juliet," "Skateaway," "Money For Nothing," "So Far Away," "Walk of Life," and "Brothers in Arms."
Part of the reason for the band's uniqueness owes to its clean, vibrant sound. Just as Knopfler's narratives reflect poetic and surrealist texts, the group's arrangements - an intoxicating combination of easygoing shuffles, bluesy boogies, and pop-honed ballads - mirror the old-fashioned soulfulness and spaciousness inherent in the classic recordings of the late 50s and early 60s. It's no wonder why Dire Straits has long been a favorite of audiophiles the world over. When it comes to sonic purity, transparent soundstages, and rich tonalities, few, if any bands sound better.
The Complete Studio Albums 1978-1991 brings together all six of Dire Straits' distinguished studio albums, starting off with the band's breakout debut Dire Straits (1978) through to Communique (1979), Making Movies (1980), Love Over Gold (1982) and commercial apex Brothers In Arms (1985), and closing out with On Every Street (1991) which was the band's last before they disbanded and Knopfler departed for a successful solo career. All six albums have been re-mastered, with all original artwork restored and the collection comes packaged in a handsome box set slipcase.
